Bathroom tap and shower finishes

Brushed brass, matt black, gunmetal or chrome. How these finishes are actually made, which of them live well in a real bathroom, and how to keep every other item in the room agreeing with the one you pick. Written for homeowners, installers and self-builders across Northern Ireland.

The short answer

Chrome is the safe one: every range does it, it survives anything, and it dates slowly. Brushed finishes — brass, nickel, gunmetal, bronze — hide water marks and fingerprints better than anything else, which is why they have taken over. Matt black is the most dramatic and the least forgiving to live with. Get the coating right, get the range availability right, and get everything else in the room agreeing with it — those three things matter far more than which colour is currently in fashion.

How it’s made

The coating decides how long the finish lasts, not the colour

Two taps can look identical on a showroom wall and behave completely differently after three years in a family bathroom. The difference is usually how the finish was applied.

Electroplating

Deposits a thin layer of metal onto the brass body. It is the traditional method, it is what most chrome is, and on a good-quality body it lasts extremely well.

PVD — physical vapour deposition

Bonds the finish at a molecular level in a vacuum chamber. It produces a substantially harder, more scratch-resistant and more corrosion-resistant surface than electroplate, and it is how most quality brushed brass, brushed nickel, gunmetal and bronze finishes are now produced.

Ask about the coating, not just the colour

This is the single most useful question to ask in a showroom, and almost nobody asks it. A PVD brushed brass and a lacquered brass-effect tap can sit beside each other at similar money, and one of them will still look new when the other has worn through at the handle. Our Aqualla brassware range is held across chrome, matt black, brushed brass, brushed nickel, gunmetal grey and brushed bronze — ask us how each one is applied and what the warranty covers.

The comparison

Six finishes, honestly compared

The two finishes that ask the most of you sit at opposite ends. Matt black is the most striking thing you can put in a white bathroom and the most demanding to keep looking right. Chrome is the opposite: it marks constantly and clears with one pass of a cloth.

FinishLooks likeLives well whereThe honest catch
ChromeBright, reflective, neutralAnywhere. Family bathrooms, rentals, resaleShows fingerprints and water spots — but wipes off instantly
Brushed brassWarm gold with a soft satin sheenWarm schemes, wood, stone, cream, deep greenReads warm — fights a genuinely cool grey scheme
Brushed nickelSoft warm silver, low glareWhere chrome feels too brightSubtle enough that some people want more contrast
Gunmetal greyDark warm graphiteContemporary schemes wanting depth, not blackNarrower range availability than chrome
Brushed bronzeDeep warm brown-bronzeCharacterful and traditional roomsStrongly characterful — commit or avoid
Matt blackFlat, graphic, high contrastWhite or pale tiling, high-contrast schemesShows every water mark and needs the most care

Brushed finishes sit in the middle, and that is precisely why they have taken over. The texture that gives them their softness also breaks up water marks and fingerprints, so they look clean for longer with less attention. If nobody in the house is going to polish a tap, a brushed finish is doing you a favour.

Living with it

What actually wrecks a tap finish

Almost every ruined finish we see was ruined by cleaning it.

Bleach, limescale removers, bathroom sprays and abrasive creams are the problem. They are formulated to attack mineral deposits and they do not distinguish between limescale and the surface underneath it. On coloured and brushed finishes they dull, streak and eventually strip the coating, and doing it is very often enough to void the warranty on the tap.

The correct method is genuinely as dull as it sounds: warm water, a little washing-up liquid, a soft cloth, and dry it afterwards. Drying is the part people skip and the part that matters, because it is evaporation that leaves the mark, not the water itself.

Northern Ireland is fortunate here. Much of the province is supplied with soft to moderately soft water, so we see far less of the aggressive limescale build-up that plagues bathrooms in the south-east of England. Water spotting still happens — but it stays cosmetic, and a dry cloth deals with it.

The two-line version

Soapy water, soft cloth, dry it. Never bleach, never descaler, never anything abrasive — on any finish, including chrome.

The whole room

A finish decision is never just about the tap

This is where bathrooms go wrong, and it is almost always discovered too late — usually when the shower enclosure arrives in chrome and everything else is brass. Choosing a finish commits you across far more items than people count.

Brassware

Basin tap, bath filler or bath/shower mixer, and the shower valve. Straightforward, as long as your chosen collection runs across all three in that finish.

The bits people forget

Basin waste, bottle trap, overflow cover and bath waste. A chrome waste sitting in a brushed brass basin is one of the most common and most avoidable mismatches.

The shower enclosure

Frame and profile colour matters enormously in a small room, because there is a lot of it. Flair shower enclosures come in matt black and brushed brass profiles as well as chrome — decide at the same time as the taps, not after them.

Accessories & heating

Towel rail or radiator, mirror frame, robe hooks, toilet roll holder, shower slide rail. The towel rail is the largest single piece of metal in most bathrooms and the one most often left in chrome by default.

Tiles and the room around it

Warm finishes want warm materials. Brushed brass against a cool grey porcelain can read as a mistake rather than a contrast — our tile ranges are in the same building, so bring the tile and the tap together.

The practical rule

Pick the finish first, then check it runs across every item on this list before you order anything. Chrome always will. Specialist finishes vary by collection, and a range with a beautiful brushed bronze basin mixer may not do a matching towel rail.

One counter, one conversation

Brassware, shower enclosures, sanitaryware, wastes, radiators and tiles are all held in our Newtownstewart building — so compatibility gets checked once, by us, before anything is ordered.

Style

Which finish suits which kind of bathroom

Traditional and period homes

Chrome or brushed brass with crosshead or lever handles. The Aqualla Georgia collection — traditional crosshead basin monos and bath/shower mixers — is the natural starting point, and brass reads as entirely correct in an older Northern Irish house rather than as a trend.

Contemporary and minimal

Matt black or gunmetal against pale, large-format tiling. Square bodies, flat backplates, clean lines. The Edge and Hanna collections sit here, and wall-mounted basin mixers strengthen the effect considerably by clearing the basin surround entirely.

Warm modern — the current direction

Brushed brass or brushed nickel with wood, stone and deeper wall colours. This is where most new Northern Irish bathrooms are heading, and the Kyloe collection’s knurled handles are the detail doing the work — worth turning by hand, because knurling photographs far better than it grips.

Family bathrooms and rentals

Chrome, without apology. Cheapest to replace, universally available, survives being cleaned badly by people who did not read this article, and never puts a buyer off.

Please check current finish availability per collection with the team before specifying — ranges and finish options are updated by the manufacturer.

Trade & specification

For installers, builders and self-builders

On a single bathroom the finish is a taste decision. Across a development, a rental refurbishment or a self-build with three bathrooms, it becomes a supply decision — and the failure modes are different.

1

Continuity across the programme

Specialist finishes move in and out of stock faster than chrome. Confirm availability for the whole programme up front rather than per plot. A close substitute halfway through a development is visible forever.

2

Batch consistency

Brushed finishes are produced in batches and can vary very slightly in tone. Within one bathroom that is invisible. Between a tap ordered in March and a matching towel rail ordered in September, it may not be. Order finish-matched items together.

3

Wastes, traps and handover

Low-value items are routinely left off a specification and then found in chrome on handover day. And put the cleaning guidance in the handover pack — most finish warranty claims we see are cleaning-product damage, and they land on the installer first.

Specifying a run of bathrooms?

Talk to us early about finish availability and lead times across the whole programme. Brassware, enclosures, sanitaryware, tiles and plumbing and electrical supplies come from one counter — see recent bathroom projects for schemes put together this way.

Why come and see it

No photograph has ever shown you a finish accurately

Brushed brass photographs as a flat yellow and in reality has depth and warmth that shifts completely between daylight and a warm bulb. Gunmetal reads as plain black on a screen and is unmistakably warmer in the hand. Matt black looks identical across every brand in a product shot, and absolutely is not.

Screens cannot show you texture, weight, or how a knurled handle actually feels to turn with wet hands — and those are the things you notice every day for the next fifteen years.

Our Newtownstewart showroom has full bathroom displays with brassware you can handle, enclosures in matching profiles, and tiles you can hold against them, in one building with easy parking. It is a short run from Omagh, Strabane, Derry and across Fermanagh and Donegal.

Bring your tile, your room dimensions, and a photo of the space. We will put the finishes beside them on the counter and you will know within a minute.

FAQs

Bathroom tap finish questions we get asked

Which bathroom tap finish lasts the longest?
A PVD-coated finish generally outlasts an electroplated or lacquered one, because the coating is bonded at a molecular level and is significantly harder and more corrosion-resistant. Most quality brushed brass, brushed nickel, gunmetal and bronze finishes are produced this way. Good-quality chrome on a solid brass body also lasts extremely well. The finish is far less important to longevity than how it was applied and what is underneath it — so ask.
Is matt black hard to keep clean?
It is the least forgiving finish for water marks, because there is no reflection to disguise them and dried water leaves a visible pale residue. It is not difficult to clean — warm soapy water and drying it deals with it entirely — it simply shows sooner than a brushed or polished finish. In a soft-water area like much of Northern Ireland it is very manageable, and it is worth the effort for the contrast it gives against pale tiling.
Can I mix tap finishes in one bathroom?
Yes, but deliberately rather than accidentally. Mixing works when there is a clear logic — for example brushed brass on the brassware with matt black on the enclosure profile and accessories. It fails when a chrome waste turns up in a brass basin, because it reads as an oversight instead of a decision. Where two finishes are used, keep each one consistent within its own group.
What cleaning products should I avoid on bathroom taps?
Bleach, limescale removers, descalers, abrasive creams and general bathroom sprays. They dull and eventually strip coloured and brushed finishes, and using them is often enough to void the warranty. Warm water with a little washing-up liquid, a soft cloth, and drying afterwards is the correct method for every finish, chrome included.
Does brushed brass suit a small bathroom?
It does, and it often works better than chrome, because the warmth stops a small white room feeling clinical. The thing to control is quantity — in a compact room the shower enclosure profile and towel rail are large pieces of metal, so decide whether they are joining the brass or staying neutral before you order, rather than after.
Do you supply brassware to trade customers in Northern Ireland?
Yes. Miller Wholesale supplies installers, builders, developers and self-builders alongside homeowners from our Newtownstewart base, with brassware, shower enclosures, sanitaryware, tiles and plumbing supplies available together.
